My Windows PC Became Slow Overnight — Here’s What I Checked First

There’s nothing more frustrating than sitting down at your computer expecting everything to work normally, only to discover that Windows has suddenly become painfully slow.

This happened to me once. My PC had been working perfectly the day before. I could open Chrome, switch between several tabs, use File Explorer, and run my usual programs without any noticeable problem. Then, seemingly overnight, everything changed.

Windows took longer to start. Programs opened slowly. Even right-clicking on the desktop seemed to take a few seconds.

My first thought was that something must have gone seriously wrong with the computer. But before I started thinking about reinstalling Windows or replacing the hardware, I decided to check a few simple things first.

Those checks helped me narrow down the problem, and many of them take only a few minutes.

1. I Checked Task Manager First

The first place I recommend checking when a Windows PC suddenly becomes slow is Task Manager.

You can open it by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard.

Once Task Manager opens, look at the Processes section. You’ll see how much of your computer’s resources are currently being used.

Pay particular attention to:

  • CPU
  • Memory
  • Disk
  • Network

If the CPU is sitting near 100% for a long time, something may be using a lot of processing power.

If Memory is almost completely used, you may simply have too many programs or browser tabs open.

The Disk percentage is also worth watching. If it stays at 100% for an extended period, that can explain why Windows feels extremely sluggish.

I wouldn’t immediately end random processes, though. Some processes belong to Windows or other important programs. If you don’t recognize something, it’s better to investigate it first rather than simply clicking End task.

2. I Looked at What Was Running in the Background

Sometimes the program making your PC slow isn’t the one you’re actively using.

For example, Windows might be installing an update in the background. Your antivirus program could be performing a scan. OneDrive or another cloud-storage application might be synchronizing a large number of files.

These activities can consume quite a bit of CPU, memory, disk activity, or internet bandwidth.

Task Manager makes it easier to spot these situations.

I usually sort the processes by CPU or Disk usage and see which applications are near the top.

If Chrome is using a lot of memory, for example, I check how many tabs and extensions I have open.

If Windows Update appears to be busy, I usually give it some time rather than immediately assuming something is broken.

3. I Restarted the Computer

This sounds almost too obvious, but a proper restart can fix surprisingly many temporary Windows problems.

And by “restart,” I mean actually choosing Restart rather than simply closing the laptop lid or leaving the computer running for days.

Windows can accumulate temporary processes and background tasks during normal use. A restart gives the operating system a chance to start fresh.

If your computer suddenly became slow today, restarting it is one of the easiest things worth trying before doing anything complicated.

If the problem disappears after restarting but returns later, that’s useful information too. It suggests that something running during normal use may be responsible.

4. I Checked How Much Storage Was Available

Another thing I checked was my available storage.

Windows needs some free space to work comfortably. If your system drive is almost completely full, you can run into performance and update problems.

To check it, open File Explorer, select This PC, and look at your drives.

If the C: drive is nearly full, don’t start deleting random Windows folders.

Instead, use Windows’ built-in storage tools.

Go to:

Settings → System → Storage

Windows will show you categories such as temporary files, installed apps, documents, pictures, and other data.

This makes it much easier to see where your storage is actually going.

I was surprised the first time I checked mine. Old downloads, large installers, temporary files, and programs I no longer used had gradually taken up a lot of space.

5. I Checked Startup Apps

If your PC is especially slow immediately after turning it on, startup applications are worth investigating.

Many programs automatically configure themselves to start with Windows. Some are useful, but others don’t need to launch every time you start your computer.

Open Task Manager and select Startup apps.

You’ll see programs that are configured to start automatically and, in many cases, an indication of how much impact they have on startup.

If you see a program you recognize but rarely use, you can consider disabling its automatic startup.

This doesn’t uninstall the program. It simply prevents it from launching automatically when Windows starts.

That small change can make startup feel noticeably cleaner, especially on an older PC.

6. I Thought About Recent Changes

One question that helped me was:

“What changed recently?”

If the computer was fine yesterday and suddenly became slow today, something may have changed.

Maybe you installed a new application.

Maybe Windows updated.

Maybe you installed a browser extension.

Maybe you connected a new device.

Maybe an antivirus scan started.

This is an important troubleshooting habit. Instead of randomly changing ten different settings, think about what happened immediately before the problem appeared.

Sometimes the answer is surprisingly obvious.

7. I Checked for Windows Updates

Windows updates aren’t usually something you should avoid, but an update can sometimes temporarily affect performance while files are being downloaded, installed, or configured.

I check:

Settings → Windows Update

If an update is currently downloading or installing, I let the process finish and then restart the computer if Windows asks me to.

I also make sure I’m not constantly postponing important updates.

8. I Didn’t Immediately Download a “PC Cleaner”

When a Windows computer becomes slow, you’ll find plenty of websites recommending “PC booster,” “RAM cleaner,” or “registry cleaner” programs.

I’d be careful with these.

You don’t necessarily need another program running in the background just because your computer is slow.

Windows already includes several useful tools for checking storage, applications, startup programs, updates, and system activity.

Before installing a third-party cleaner, I’d first figure out what is actually causing the slowdown.

When It’s Time to Look at the Hardware

If you’ve checked the software side and the computer is still consistently slow, the problem may be hardware-related.

An older computer with a traditional hard disk drive can feel dramatically slower than a newer machine with an SSD.

Limited RAM can also become a problem if you regularly run demanding programs or keep dozens of browser tabs open.

In some cases, upgrading from an HDD to an SSD can make an older PC feel like a completely different machine.

Final Thoughts

When my Windows PC suddenly became slow, my first instinct was to assume that something major had broken.

It turned out that troubleshooting the problem step by step was much more useful than immediately looking for a complicated solution.

If your PC has suddenly slowed down, start with the basics:

Check Task Manager, restart the computer, look at your available storage, review startup applications, check for updates, and think about anything that recently changed.

Most importantly, don’t start deleting system files or installing questionable “speed booster” software just because your computer feels slow.

The goal isn’t simply to make Windows faster. It’s to find out why it became slow in the first place.

Once you know the cause, the solution is usually much easier to find.
